Cornucopia celebrates SPIN’s thirtieth birthday and is the second instalment of our White Box project. inside each box is a one-off collection of prints, sketches, publications, transparencies and other artefacts that document the life of the studio from its inception in 1992 to the present day. It’s both a stockpile of design-related rarities and a time capsule or museum of SPIN. In mythology, a ‘cornucopia’ is a horn of plenty: a symbol of abundance, endless variety and good fortune. Our Cornucopia project assumes that collecting can be an artistic gesture, that there is something creative in the accumulation and curation of objects. The artistic ‘readymade’ has long been used to question the ways in which value becomes assigned. But there’s also a personal element here; as collections of readymades, they turn memories into things, life into art.
